Bob Etheridge vlog mutual-interview from the DNC
I also caught up with U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge after this morning's breakfast. He was really excited to talk about engaging young voters. I think his questions to me were pretty good.
Warning: I held the camera myself and it shows! You might want to just listen to the audio. I'll try not to do this again. I bet you won't find this cross-posted on Etheridge's website!
I'm honored that he seemed to think I'm in college! I liked that he asked about keeping young people involved. I think that Baby Boomers often wonder why younger people haven't been as involved with the political process as they are/were. To a large extent, I think that's because Boomer's dominate the scene and don't always make space for young people to contribute in meaningful ways. If the Boomer generation wants to keep the Obama Generation engaged, we've got to address young people's issues and give them positions of real leadership.

Good answer on energy
I didn't expect that kind of talk from Etheridge. That was a good answer.

Please spell his name correctly
His last name is spelled Etheridge.
These interviews are wonderful.
They make a kind of space/time capsule of what's important and where we are now in NC.
Keep up the good work.
Progressive Democrats of North Carolina
Thanks for posting this interview with my house member.
His responses to your questions show why he is such a good representitive. It's not all about him, it's about the people he represents and the country as a whole. No glitz, no ego, just a job to do, and he's back home almost every weekend.
Well, HUH, ya know I love ya, but
Etheridge was one of the first to jump on that
"let's make flag-burning a crime" wagon.
That doesn't contradict or counter anything you've said about him, but it was a disappointment to me, as well as, perhaps, a belated lesson in how conservative NC Democrats are.
I'm still miffed.
That's one of those things
That's one of those things that I wouldn't support and don't really know his explanation for doing so. But it's like what I remember hearing my Daddy tell someone once when I was a little boy. The person wondered why he had not done something about what a guy that worked for him had done that he didn't approve of. Daddy told the man, "Larry is honest, loyal and a hard worker. I would have a hard time running this station without him. Sometimes you've got to let a man do what he's going to do even if you don't always like the way he goes about it." That's a paraphrase given that I was about 7 or 8 years old when I heard it but It's pretty much stuck with me since. Bob doesn't always do what I would have done, doesn't alway take the position I think is right, but he's honest, loyal and a hard worker. His motivation is sincere, and I agree with him a lot more often than not so I'm glad we've got him working for us in Washington. And now I'm thinking about my Daddy with a tear in my eye. Thanks for bringing back that memory.
62 Democrats voted against
62 Democrats voted against the Patriot Act. Bob Etheridge wasn't one of them.
So 62 voted against, Bob was
So 62 voted against, Bob was one of how many Democrats that voted for it? There's a heck of a lot of votes he's made over the years that you would be in support of.
I am sure there are some
I am sure there are some votes he voted for i would agree with. With all things being equal i tend to look at the votes that concern me the most and i expect Democratic congressmen to vote differently than the Hayes and Foxx of this world. Sadly in many of these issues like the Patriot Act, The thought crime bill and other attacks on our civil liberties folks like Etheridge, Price and Miller dont vote any differently than Hayes or Foxx.
yeah, I know
I agree that it would be unreasonable to hold it agin' him to the point that I would vote for his opposition. Hillary cast some similarly smarmy votes (including one for the freakin' flag burning), and I've forgiven her time and again.
But I remember particularly the sense of sharp disappointment with Bob on this maybe, because of some of the statements he made to go with it -- none of which I recall, or maybe because my sense of idealism about Congress respecting the Constitution was still so strong. This was waaay back in time, one of the earlier go 'rounds for that issue, maybe in '92.
I was still learning, and I hated that wake-up-to-reality-lesson.
