Electric Rate Increase of 4% in Eastern NC - Why? - ElectriCities needs to build up a rainy day fund
http://www.wilsontimes.com/News/Breaking/
Does this sound as stupid to you as it does me? You read it right. They are out of money so they need to build up a fund and they need to do that by charging us. I know what you are thinking ... they could make cuts, freeze hiring, cut out advertising, sell their hybrid car, get rid of the wasteful fleet cars, stop buying goodies, stop taking trips, stop sponsoring groups and events, end their beach parties, eliminate too many lobbyists, eliminate communications, planning, marketing, regulatory affairs, economic development ... so many options. But they come up with charging us. And has anyone seen any cuts? I am beginning to believe the idiot CEOs standing before Barney Frank are better than the ElectriCities keystone cops. Tilton is gone but his legacy remains.
And, a friend just told me that the Wilson Times buckled to the "online forum" complaints from the high elected officials. That's right folks, people blogged in Wilson about corruption, improper spending, situations in schools, taxes, parking, buildings, late fees and it caused pain to the Mayor, Council Members, County Commissioners, School Board so they pooled their influence and got the paper to shut it down. How do you like that for censorship?

ElectriCities is
a joke and you are right on target.
I understand that Rocky Mount City Councilman Andre Knight and NCEMPA member really challenged ElectriCities today in Wilson. Can't wait to see how the Wilson Times report that.

Maybe I missed one of your posts....
but doesn't the Utilities Comm for NC have to approve any rate increase, after public hearings?
No regulation for these cities
The cities with their electric power through these two power agencies are not regulated. The city councils make all the decisions after the power agencies pass costs to them. But, ElectriCities has a bunch of staff running around the Utilities Commission wasting more money acting like they do something when they are not even regulated there. Who can figure this out. It is likely the most screwed up business model.
So they are considered 'private' companies, although...
the communities have no other means of generating electricity? Sounds like a sweet deal for them.
Electric cities
Don't generate - they own part of the coal plants cp&l has and the nuclear plants. Then they buy the other power they need from CP&L/Progress Energy. ElectriCities is some middle man concoction some lawyers came up with to spend money and the power agencies were created by the Legislature. I think they are public since it is cities. But they are not regulated on anything so your local official (and we have some pretty bad ones) make these decisions, even though they know nothing. The Mayor of Wilson has been humiliated by his lack of knowledge to the point of removing community leaders when they asked tough questions. He has so been exposed that he used his influence to have the paper pull the plug on a forum where people were educating themselves and organizing. But he does not understand that they long ago moved to another site free of the media and are still organizing.
