Let the Games Begin - Cumberland County GOP Calls Foul in Early Voting

Remember all the complaining from the Republicans about a certain tree-related organization? Seems like some of them believed it in Cumberland County.

From today's Fayetteville Observer:

The local Republican Party is protesting the results of this month’s Cumberland County commissioners race, arguing that thousands of voters used fictitious or incorrect addresses.

I'm not saying this challenge isn't meritorious (well...). But I find it curious that the county GOP is only challenging early voters in the county commissioners race. For those who are not familiar with our commissioners election...six candidates were up (3 Dems, 3 GOP) for three positions. I'll just let you guess which party won all three seats (yes, I love straight ticket, too). I'll admit, the GOP incumbent commissioner who lost was a good commissioner, but that's an election for you. But it seems the local GOP is not content with an all Democratic Cumberland County Board of Commissioners.

Just to pretend there's a case here for a moment, such a challenge would also affect our local school board races, two of which were quite close.

The Board of Elections is supposed to hear the challenge of Monday. I'm not worried...to quote the end of the article:

Bob Hall, executive director of Democracy North Carolina, a nonpartisan center in Durham that worked hard with organizations promoting early voting and same-day registration this year, has urged Cumberland County election officials to dismiss Reagan’s petition, mainly because he has not supplied a single questionable address yet.

I have class on 9 a.m. on Monday, but I'll be sure someone is attending the meeting. For anyone who remembers, this is reminiscent of when still-State Auditor Les Merritt caused a ruckus in a Senate committee, claiming evidence of large amount of ineligible voters on the voter rolls, and when the time came to present what he had...nothing.

Another "Oh Noes" moment for the GOP?

Democracy works! W00T!

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

Progressive Discussions

Oh, Cumberland will survive with all Dems.

Right next door, Moore has been surviving with all Republicans since 1985. Sounds like they're just not used to losing. I hope the new commissioners do a good job and get re-elected.
