The closest Congressional district in the state is the 5th, where Virginia Foxx leads Roy Carter 48-46. I really hope the DCCC and other folks take the pick up opportunity in this district seriously. There are races on the Red to Blue list that based on the data I've seen are less winnable than this one.

Roy Carter took his battle for Virginia Foxx's seat in Congress to the airwaves last night, running this ad in the district during Barack Obama's triumphant acceptance speech and ESPN's coverage of Wake Forest football's decimation of Baylor.

Message: GAME ON!

According to financial disclosure records, Foxx has owned between $15,001 and $50,000 of stock in Chevron Corporation since 2004. She has also accepted campaign contributions from the Petroleum Marketers Association of America as well as Exxon Mobil.

North Carolina’s fifth district, spanning the northwest corner of the state, is currently represented by second term congresswoman Virginia Foxx, who, in addition to being in lockstep with President Bush on nearly every issue, has voted against SCHIP, Hurricane Katrina Relief, and extending the Voting Rights Act. Challenging her is Roy Carter, a longtime high school teacher and football coach whose dedication to public service spans 40 years. This district, until recently a Republican stronghold, is energized for change. Foxx’s approval rating within the district has been dropping steadily for months, and currently is among the lowest of active representatives.

I am not a career politician and am new to the debate scene. I am a career educator with a passion for serving the people of our district who have been betrayed by Virginia Foxx and her callous voting record in Congress. I want people to come away from these debates knowing that I am the candidate who will best represent their values, understand the needs of their communities, and always place their best interests above political gain.

November 14, 2007, 2nd Lieutenant Peter H. Burks, Specialist Derek R. Bunks and Sergeant Kenneth R. Booker were all killed in Iraq under hostile fire. August, September and October had seen 189 U.S. fatalities in Iraq and the U.S. Armed Services death toll had escalated to 3,830 by November 14th.

That same day House Resolution 4156 landed on the floor of the House of Representatives.

The above quote is in direct response to Virginia Foxx’s question: “I guess that means that he’s supporting them, (Sens. Clinton and Obama), Does it mean that’s he’s supporting the most liberal person in the Senate and the sixteenth most liberal person in the Senate? Is he throwing his hat in the ring with them?”

Virginia Foxx has once again awakened me from a political hibernation.
