BERGER AND THE NC GOP'S DESPERATION TO KEEP POWER: In a cliché-riddled campaign fundraising pitch state Senate leader Phil Berger insulted the non-partisan medical and scientific professionals at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as “Left-Wing bureaucrats playing political games and trying to control Americans lives.” In the email labeled “guidelines to ignore,” he facetiously likened recommendations for protection against the deadly coronavirus to admonitions against eating raw cookie dough. These professionals at the CDC are working desperately to save lives and stem the spread of the deadly virus that has taken more than 13,650 lives in North Carolina and 613,000 nationwide. There is no acceptable rational for anyone, particularly the leader of North Carolina’s state Senate, to urge people to ignore the common-sense advice of the CDC. What the letter did expose is the depths of irresponsibility Berger will go to in an effort to raise money and divide the community merely to seize some potential partisan advantage.

Saturday News: Stay in your lane, dude

CAWTHORN TRIES TO WIELD UNDUE INFLUENCE OVER BUNCOMBE SCHOOL BOARD: Congressman Madison Cawthorn made a surprise appearance at the meeting. Cawthorn, who represents North Carolina's 11th Congressional District, said he has several concerns with requiring children to wear masks. “Number one reason is looking at the scientific data that backs up how many children are getting infected with COVID-19. If they are getting infected, exactly how severely is it,” Cawthorn said. “It’s a very low, low, low percentage.” On Thursday night, 33 people took to the podium at the board’s regularly scheduled meeting to voice their concerns. Some, like Stephanie Parsons, called the decision unconstitutional. “We are a republic,” Parsons said. “We are not a autocracy. You are not dictators, and you do not get to tell us what we can and cannot do with our children.” The irony of someone wailing about "autocracy" who is also likely a Trump supporter is overwhelming.

TRIANGLE MUNICIPALITIES CRACK DOWN ON MASK-WEARING: Masks are required inside city-owned property in Raleigh regardless of a person’s vaccination status. “The city has used education to convey to employees the benefits of getting vaccinated,” said Julia Milstead, the city’s public information officer. “At this point, there has been no discussion on making them mandatory.” Employees and visitors to Wake Forest facilities are required to wear masks as of Monday, said Bill Crabtree, communications & public affairs director. Chapel Hill never lifted its requirement that employees and the public wear masks inside public buildings, Mayor Pam Hemminger said. The Town Council will continue to meet virtually through September, she said. In many ways this is better than the Governor doing it, local pols need to step up and use their authority.

NC GOP LICKING ITS CHOPS OVER SPORTS BETTING LEGISLATION: Senate Bill 688 would allow 10 to 12 licensed sports wagering businesses in the state offering on-site betting at or near sporting facilities, as well as online gambling. They'd pay $500,000 for an initial license and, as the bill is written now, an 8 percent tax on transactions. That tax rate is likely to increase as the bill moves through the legislative process, sponsoring Sen. Jim Perry, R-Lenoir, said Wednesday. A key budget writer, Sen. Ralph Hise, R-Mitchell, promised an amendment that would keep the General Assembly holding those purse strings. Perry's bill initially pushed half of the tax revenue into a fund controlled by the state Department of Commerce and meant to attract major events, like a Super Bowl or a golf tournament. I thought Ralph Hise was a Word Of Faith fundamentalist? Must be the Prosperity Gospel...

WAKE GOP PUSHES RECKLESS PETITION ON SCHOOL MASKING, VACCINES : The Wake County Republican Party is trying to get 5,000 signatures by Monday on a petition asking the district to make face masks optional. The petition had more than 3,700 signatures as of early Monday afternoon. “Parents who wish to send their children to school in masks should do so if they choose,” according to the petition sponsored by the Carolina Teachers Alliance, a group that’s trying to be a conservative alternative to the N.C. Association of Educators. The petition also says Wake shouldn’t promote students getting the COVID-19 vaccine or allow vaccination clinics to be held on school property. While most doctors and medical groups say the COVID-19 vaccine is safe, the petition claims that they are “experimental medical treatments.”

Monday News: Free-fire zone

TWO IDIOTS GET INTO A SHOOTOUT, YOUNG DAUGHTER GETS SHOT: A young girl was among three people injured by gunfire during a road rage incident that erupted into shooting between two motorists. WRAL-TV reported that both drivers have claimed self-defense. The gun violence occurred Saturday in Granville County. Both cars were driven by men. They had girlfriends and daughters as passengers. According to the Raleigh station, the men exchanged heated words before opening fire on each other. The exact nature of the dispute is unclear. The report says one driver was shot in the neck and his young daughter sustained a wound to a leg. The other motorist was shot in the hand. The medical status of the youngster and the two men was not immediately clear. Investigators are reviewing video from security cameras at a grocery store's parking lot where some kind of dispute apparently escalated. Grocery shopping is dangerous business, apparently.

COPS POINT TO TRUMP'S RESPONSIBILITY IN JAN 6 CAPITOL MOB ATTACK: Politicians who claim to support the “thin blue line” of law enforcement officers, decry those who chant “defund the police” cannot then ignore or deny the abuses and violence of the Jan. 6 mob. Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Officer Daniel Hodges put it directly: “To my perpetual confusion, I saw the thin blue line flag, a symbol of support for law enforcement more than once being carried by the terrorists as they ignored our commands and continued to assault us.” The rioters smashed his head. “One latched onto my face and got his thumb in my right eye, attempting to gouge it out. I cried out in pain and managed to shake him off before any permanent damage was done.” He later added, “It’s a pathetic excuse for something that he (President Trump) helped create… this monstrosity. I’m still recovering from those hugs and kisses he claims the rioters were giving us that day.”

Friday News: Dr. Phil? Not even close...

BERGER'S FUNDRAISING E-MAIL SAYS TO IGNORE CDC MASK GUIDELINES: Senate Leader Phil Berger called the CDC’s guidance on wearing masks as something similar to that of eating raw cookie dough: “guidance to ignore.” A fundraising email sent Wednesday morning said the latest CDC guidelines aren’t based on science but a method by Dr. Anthony Fauci, the media and liberals to control the American people. When asked if Berger had any concerns that his email could cause a distrust of the CDC among North Carolinians, Watts responded, “The CDC is doing a perfectly capable job of that itself.” The News & Observer emailed NCDHHS for comment on Berger’s email but did not immediately get a response. 28 people died between yesterday and today, so take your cookie dough and shove it.

BLACK TRUMP-LOVER WANTS TO BE DURHAM'S NEXT MAYOR: Lane hosts the online series “Mind of Jamal,” which he describes as a “news reporting platform.” Since 2016, he has amassed over 300,000 followers on Facebook and almost 35,000 subscribers on YouTube. On his videos he has expressed support for former President Donald Trump; outrage over COVID-19 mask mandates; and disdain for the Black Lives Matter movement, efforts to defund the police and the media. In an interview with The N&O, Lane, who is Black, said his top priorities if elected would be crime and gun violence. “I believe that Durham crime is out of control because too many people are compassionate toward the criminals instead of putting the compassion towards the victims,” he said.

Wednesday News: The company you keep

HILLSBOROUGH BAR (AND CHAMBER) HAVE A PROUD BOY PROBLEM: Hot Tin Roof patron, Colin Dodd, sparked the controversy with a series of posts about a Hillsborough resident and known Proud Boy who had been frequenting the bar and occasionally bringing some of his friends with him. Kim Tesoro, a co-owner of the bar Hot Tin Roof, was hired as CEO of the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce in 2017. The issues surrounding the Proud Boys patronizing the bar “are in the hands of the ownership of Hot Tin Roof and their legal counsel,” the board said. Tesoro has referred questions to the bar’s attorney, Lynne Holtkamp, who issued a statement on July 7 but has not returned The N&O’s phone calls. I don't give AF about "diverse" opinions, Proud Boys are dangerous. They've attacked people in public several times, and took part in attempted coup of our elected government. They don't get a seat at the table, or the bar.
